Buying in Bulk: A Smart Choice that Transforms Consumption

When we buy in bulk, we can purchase the exact quantities we need and use our own containers, which not only reduces food waste but also saves new resources for the planet by reusing our containers/bags.

The truth is that most of the time, we need 150g of something for a specific dish we saw in a recipe, but we end up buying 1kg, which then sits in the pantry for weeks or months until we make the same recipe again. After a while, we realize it’s gone unused, we pick up the packaging and realize it’s past its expiration date. What happens? Often, it goes into the trash, which represents food waste.

Buying in bulk is more than a passing trend. It represents a significant shift in consumer behavior, as people become increasingly aware of the economic and environmental impacts of their choices.

Waste Reduction: The Fight Against Food Waste in Portugal

It is estimated that 1.8 million tonnes of food are wasted every year, which is, on average, more than 180 kg per Portuguese person. Each Portuguese person produces 511 kg of waste per year, and 40% of that is food scraps. We are literally throwing our money in the trash!

Buying in bulk helps combat this problem by allowing consumers to purchase only the necessary amount of food, preventing products from being thrown away due to lack of use.

Moreover, packaging waste is another critical issue. In 2021, Portugal produced approximately 1.5 million tonnes of packaging waste, according to Sociedade Ponto Verde (SPV). By buying in bulk and bringing your own reusable packaging, you can help significantly reduce waste production, contributing to a more sustainable country.

Financial Savings: Benefits for Your Wallet

With inflation on the rise and the cost of living increasing, many Portuguese are looking for ways to save money.
Buying in bulk is an effective strategy to reduce expenses. According to a study by Deco Proteste, buying in bulk can result in savings of up to 20% compared to buying packaged products. By eliminating the cost of packaging and focusing solely on the product, prices tend to be more competitive, especially for those who buy in larger quantities. And I remind you that to compare a packaged product with an unpackaged one, we should compare exactly the same product :)

Furthermore, since you buy exactly what you need, you avoid unnecessary spending on products that might spoil or go unused, which also represents significant savings at the end of the month.

Variety and Quality: Fresh and Locally Sourced Products

Bulk stores in Portugal offer a wide range of products, many of them locally sourced and of high quality. In 2020, the organic products market in Portugal grew by about 40%, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). Many bulk stores leverage this trend to provide organic foods, free from pesticides and chemical additives, promoting a healthier and more sustainable diet.

Additionally, by buying in bulk, you can experiment with new ingredients without committing to buying large quantities, which encourages a more diverse, nutritious, and enjoyable diet.

Environmental Awareness: Reducing Your Ecological Footprint

The environmental impact of packaging is a growing concern. In 2021, only 39% of plastic waste in Portugal was recycled, according to the Portuguese Association of Waste Management and Recycling Companies (APEGRA). The rest was incinerated or sent to landfills, contributing to environmental pollution.

Buying in bulk is an effective way to reduce your ecological footprint, significantly decreasing the reliance on new disposable plastic packaging. Furthermore, many bulk stores in Portugal are committed to sustainable sourcing practices, promoting products from local producers who respect the environment and people.

Social Impact: Supporting Local Commerce and the Circular Economy

By choosing to buy in bulk, in addition to making a conscious choice regarding the environment, you are also supporting local commerce. Bulk stores in Portugal are, for the most part, small businesses that value proximity to customers and product quality. According to data from the Confederation of Commerce and Services of Portugal (CCP), local commerce is responsible for over 500,000 jobs in the country, being an essential pillar of the Portuguese economy.

Furthermore, many of these stores participate in circular economy initiatives, promoting resource reuse and minimizing waste.

Minimalist Lifestyle: Simplifying Consumption

Bulk buying aligns with a minimalist lifestyle, which has gained popularity in Portugal. By buying only what is necessary, consumers reduce the accumulation of unnecessary products at home, leading to a more organized and less stressful life. This movement is in tune with the growing demand for conscious consumption practices, which value quality over quantity.

Buying in bulk is a practice that brings clear benefits to the consumer, both in terms of financial savings and environmental impact. By adopting this habit, you contribute to reducing food waste, decrease waste production, and support local commerce.

With data showing how much this practice can make a difference, how about taking the first step?
