About the book Say No to Waste with Simão
Description:
On what would have been just another Friday, Simão received a gift from his grandmother Júlia: a wooden kitchen! But this was no ordinary kitchen. It was a kitchen full of stories and with a very special message.
This book serves as a warning about the importance of reducing food waste. In it, you will learn about a series of practices that Simão and his family adopt daily at home: did you know that aromatic herbs should be stored in a container with water? And that lettuce and spinach should be kept in damp cloths, in closed containers, so they last longer? Have you ever tried making bean meatballs? And composting, do you want to know what it is and how it's done?
Discover how, with small and powerful changes like these, you can fight for a fairer, more abundant, and more sustainable planet.
About:
Simão is born as the protagonist of this book to show us, with his prodigious imagination and optimistic determination, how we, as a family, from our homes and kitchens, can adopt small gestures of change with impact.
Through his hand, we sit at the table, a symbol of sharing and time together, and we realize that it is possible to include more plant-based meals in our routine (he leaves us some of his favorite recipes!), with seasonal and locally sourced ingredients (in this case, from his grandmother's farm). We learn to plan our purchases, to preserve food better and use it fully, and even to compost.
Along the way, there are talking (im)perfect broccoli and apples that remind us of the urgency of combating one of the most serious problems we face - food waste.
Grandmother Júlia represents the paradigm of abundance, ancestral knowledge, and respect for the land. More than that, the grandmother (and this family) is the personification of the power of love: those who love care. For others. For the planet.
Creative process of the illustrations
The illustrations in this book were inspired by the "collage" technique of artist Laura Morais (Bolbo). They reflect and were designed with a logic of reuse and waste reduction. We gave a second life to the chosen materials: from a paper bag used to buy bread, we made the father's shirt; eggshells became the grandmother's hair; from pencil shavings and cardstock sheets, reused from a watercolor painting, we obtained the hair of the main character and the father; dried tree leaves gave rise to the shoes; and fabric scraps and a withered flower turned into the grandmother's earrings.
All collected materials were digitized, so they can always be used without needing to spend more material for the development of the illustrative process. The different tonality and shape present in the illustrations are the result of resorting to new technologies, which allow for exploring the collected materials in various ways.
