Description
Jala Neti is one of the six purificatory actions presented in the treatises of Hatha Yoga.
Jala means water and neti, in this context, cleansing.
It is a cleansing action of the nasal passages and nasal mucosa that is done using this pot, warm water, and salt. It eliminates the accumulation of mucus, other impurities such as pathogenic microorganisms, and drains the paranasal sinuses.
And it helps in the prevention and treatment of various diseases such as sinusitis, rhinitis, common cold, flu, respiratory allergies, etc.
It also keeps the secretion and drainage mechanisms of the ear, nose, and throat healthy, preventing ocular, throat, and ear inflammations. It increases resistance to climate changes and air pollution.
Furthermore, it promotes an improvement in visual acuity by stimulating the lacrimal ducts and glands. Energetically, it balances the flow of prana and stimulates the ajña chakra.
When to do it? How often?
This action should
not be done every day unless recommended by a professional to aid in the treatment of a specific condition.
It is also
not recommended to do it at night, before going to bed, so that water residue does not accumulate in the ear canal.
However, to decongest mucus, relieve respiratory limitations caused by the flu, common cold, or allergy, you can consider doing it for 3 consecutive days.
But if you are only looking for maintenance and prevention of respiratory diseases, don't overdo it; do it at most once a week.
Jala Neti can be a spaced discipline, done once or twice a month, or at specific times such as seasonal transitions or when you feel the need.
